Ben Stokes has revealed he would love to coach England in the future, while expressing concerns about Joe Root taking over as Test captain.

England were beaten 2-1 by New Zealand, continuing a poor run that includes a 4-1 Ashes loss in Australia. Stokes confirmed he has definitely retired from international cricket and ruled out a return for the 2027 Ashes.

Root was appointed England Test captain, despite Joe Root previously backing Zak Crawley for the role. Stokes had supported Crawley, who became vice-captain during the last Ashes tour but faced off-field issues in New Zealand. Root previously captained England from 2017 to 2022, achieving a record 27 Test wins in 65 matches.

Stokes expressed his only worry is Root's well-being, having witnessed the toll the captaincy took on him previously. He praised Root's team-first attitude and looks forward to seeing the team's future success under Root and new coach Stephen Fleming.
