Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva stormed into her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, dismantling Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in blustery conditions. The 19-year-old eighth seed becomes the fourth-youngest woman in 30 years to reach the Paris showpiece, joining Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and Coco Gauff. She awaits compatriot Diana Shnaider or Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska on Saturday.

Andreeva's clay-court dominance this season is staggering — 21 victories on the surface, more than any player in 2026, and 35 wins overall. She dropped only one set en route to the final, a second-round comeback against Marina Bassols Ribera. Kostyuk arrived on a 17-match clay unbeaten streak and had beaten Andreeva twice this year, yet committed 34 unforced errors to Andreeva's 22.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine cast a shadow over the contest. Kostyuk, a vocal critic of the war since 2022, declined a pre-match photo and skipped the customary handshake — consistent with the stance Ukrainian players have maintained for four years. Andreeva acknowledged nerves but credited a fighting mindset: "I told myself to accept everything that happens on the court and no matter what happens, I am going to fight."

With world number one Aryna Sabalenka's shock exit Wednesday, the path opens for Andreeva to become the third-youngest first-time major champion this century, after Maria Sharapova and Emma Raducanu. Her baseline solidity and defensive stubbornness neutralized Kostyuk's aggression, and the Russian now carries favorite status into Saturday's final.
