Aimee Barrett‑Theron, one of the world's leading female referees, has stood down from officiating after a breast cancer diagnosis. The 39‑year‑old South African is the most‑capped female international referee, having taken charge of 52 Tests. In a statement she said, “I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer,” adding that the disease is treatable and she is working with specialists to return to the field in months.

Barrett‑Theron discovered the problem through a self‑check and urged others to do the same, saying, “Please let this be your reminder: check yourself, listen to your body, and don’t delay getting anything unusual looked at.” She last refereed South Africa A against Zimbabwe and has also officiated in the United Rugby Championship.

Her 2024 headline at the Under‑20 Six Nations, where she confronted England’s Henry Pollock and Wales players, earned her a legion of fans. She was also on the panel for the Women’s Rugby World Cup final between England and Canada at Allianz Stadium last year.

SARU president Mark Alexander praised her trailblazing career and said, “Aimee will approach her treatment with the same determination and single‑mindedness.” He wished her a swift recovery and hopes she returns to the field.
