Of the 22 teams to have won the World Cup, 19 averaged between 26 and 28 years, with a median of 27 years and 57 days. England, France and Spain fit that bracket, giving hope that a prime‑aged squad could repeat history.

Argentina would become one of the oldest winning sides if they succeed; their starting 11 against Switzerland averaged 30.5 years, with Lionel Messi at 39. Across the tournament the average was 29 years 302 days, and the last two sides to take the field were over 30.

Only Brazil in 1962 reached an average age of 30 years 204 days. The youngest champions were Argentina in 1978 (25 years 195 days) and France in 2018 (25 years 326 days). England’s squad has just two players at 27, with Chalobah 27 years 14 days and Rice 27.5. The rest are 23, and by 2030 they will be 27.

In the 26‑man squad, seven are 26‑28, the age range that has produced 86.4% of World Cup average starting ages. England is the youngest semi‑finalist at 26 years 255 days, Spain 26 years 271 days, and France 27 years 194 days.
