White House Demands DHS Reopen Before World Cup Amid Security Crisis

The White House is urging the Department of Homeland Security to reopen ahead of this summer's World Cup, warning that the nine-week shutdown threatens security preparations for the tournament. With millions of visitors expected across the United States, Canada and Mexico, officials say the timing could not be worse.

The DHS dispute stems from Democrats blocking funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which falls under the department. They want reforms following two deadly shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis in January. Congressman Mike Lawler from New York, a host city, called the situation insane, saying the department responsible for coordinating event security has been shut down during an international event in the area most targeted for terrorism.

The 48-team World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, representing an unprecedented security challenge. Earlier this month, officials warned the shutdown has hampered coordination between local and federal agencies. President Trump has urged Republicans in Congress to agree on legislation by the start of June.
