VAR Panel Overturns Arsenal Penalty Call Against Brighton

Brighton should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-0 home loss to Arsenal on March 4th, the Premier League's Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel ruled, overturning the initial decision.

Referee Chris Kavanagh allowed play to continue after Gabriel Martinelli hauled down Mats Wieffer in the box during the third minute of first-half stoppage time. The video assistant referee (VAR), Michael Salisbury, also deemed no clear error, allowing the goal to stand. Fabian Hurzeler's complaint to fourth official David Webb led to a touchline row with Mikel Arteta.

The KMI Panel voted 4:1 that a spot-kick should have been awarded on the field and 3:2 that it was a missed VAR intervention. The panel's report stated Martinelli "is not looking at the ball, holds Weffer into the area and prevents the Brighton player from challenging for the ball." This marks the second time this season Arsenal escaped a VAR penalty in a 1-0 away win, following a similar incident involving Everton and William Saliba in December.

The season total of 18 VAR errors now matches the entire 2024-25 campaign's total. Leeds United also missed out on a penalty in their 1-0 home loss to Sunderland for Luke O'Nien's holding offence on Pascal Struijk. Arsenal have faced no VAR mistakes this season.
