Union Berlin director of football Horst Heldt publicly blasted what he called “insane” sexist abuse targeting incoming head coach Marie-Louise Eta. Heldt expressed complete conviction in Eta, who is set to take charge of the women's side this summer after making history as the Bundesliga's first female assistant coach in November 2023.

Heldt emphasized that the club stands 100% behind the decision, dismissing the inappropriate commentary surrounding the appointment of a highly competent leader. Eta previously deputised for manager Nenad Bjelica during a 1-0 win in January, demonstrating her capability on the touchline. The club currently sits 11th in the table.

Eta brings proven experience, having previously led the U19s team and secured a Women's Champions League title with Turbine Potsdam. Heldt pointed out that her familiarity with the club environment, players, and stadium removes any need to show her the ropes. Union believes prior head coaching experience makes her the logical next step for the role.

This strong backing arrives as the senior men’s team struggles, having secured only two league wins in their last 14 outings, leaving them 11 points clear of the drop zone with five games remaining. Heldt confirmed Eta begins training duties this Tuesday, already getting a handle on things quickly after her prior involvement with the club structure.
