Tottenham Hotspur have sealed a £52m deal for Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton. The 26‑year‑old began the transfer window on the back of a World Cup start against Japan, drawing 2‑2. Brighton still had one year left on his contract, but the player showed no interest in an extension for the season.

Brighton had previously rejected an earlier bid for the player after he joined them from NAC Breda in 2020. The club now accepted Tottenham's offer, clearing a path for van Hecke to reunite with former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi in north London and boost his defensive options for the upcoming campaign in the league.

Over the last campaign, van Hecke made 131 appearances for the Seagulls, starting 36 of 38 Premier League matches as Brighton finished eighth and earned European qualification for the first time since 2014, a milestone that marked the club's return to continental competition after a decade of absence and set a new benchmark for the club.

Tottenham's acquisition signals a clear intent to climb out of the bottom‑half slump, bolstered by recent signings of Andy Robertson from Liverpool and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth. Preparing for the League qualifiers European entry, Spurs aim to secure a top‑ten finish and a strong start to next year’s Premier League.
