Tottenham Hotspur have secured Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a deal worth £52m. The 26-year-old centre-back, who had one year remaining on his contract, has signed a long-term agreement with the north London club. The transfer also includes a significant sell-on clause benefiting Brighton should Van Hecke move again in the future.

Van Hecke impressed during his three seasons at the Amex Stadium, making 131 appearances and starting 36 of Brighton's 38 Premier League matches last campaign. His performances helped the Seagulls achieve an eighth-place finish and secure European qualification for only the second time in their history. The defender previously worked under Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who praised his intelligence and bravery in possession.

At Tottenham, Van Hecke reunites with international teammate Micky van de Ven, with whom he featured in the Netherlands' World Cup match against Japan. He'll also join fellow Dutchman Xavi Simons during his ACL recovery. Sporting director Johan Lange confirmed the club tracked Van Hecke for several years before completing this substantial investment.

This signing addresses Spurs' defensive needs following recent departures, providing a player already familiar with De Zerbi's tactical demands. The £52m fee reflects Van Hecke's growing reputation and Tottenham's ambition to strengthen their backline for European competition next season.
