Tottenham have shattered their transfer record by securing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for a fee that could reach £100m — an initial £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons. The 26-year-old Italy international joins after three seasons at St James' Park, where he made 79 Premier League appearances and scored five goals. His arrival follows the £85m capture of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, signalling a radical rebuild under Roberto de Zerbi.

Tonali's Newcastle tenure was defined by adversity and redemption. A 10-month betting ban imposed by the FIGC sidelined him shortly after his £55m move from AC Milan in 2023, but he returned to become instrumental in the Magpies' Carabao Cup triumph in 2025 — the club's first trophy in 70 years. In an emotional farewell, Tonali thanked Eddie Howe for "always having my back" and described Newcastle as a city that gave him "more than football."

De Zerbi, who took charge in March and steered Spurs clear of relegation after a 17th-place finish, has a long-standing connection with Tonali from their shared Brescia roots. The spending spree is underpinned by the Premier League's new squad-cost ratio (SCR) rules. Tottenham's £565m revenue for 2024-25 allows up to £480m annually on player costs, with wages and amortisation currently at just 61%. The new stadium's commercial transformation — matchday income up from £45m to £126m, commercial revenue from £73m to £277m — provides the financial engine. Amortisation spreads the £240m outlay over five years, meaning a manageable £48m yearly hit. Spurs are exploiting a regulatory window that rewards revenue growth, not just owner largesse.
