Torreense Makes European History in Second Division

Torreense will become one of rare second division clubs to play European football after winning the Portuguese Cup final 2-1 against Sporting CP. Despite losing 2-0 to Casa Pia in the promotion play-off, the 109-year-old club secured a place in the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League league phase. This remarkable achievement comes after finishing third in the Portuguese second division.

The club from Torres Vedras, a town 25 miles north of Lisbon with a 2,500-seat stadium, will face logistical challenges. Their home ground doesn't meet UEFA requirements, forcing them to play matches 193 miles away at the Estadio Algarve in Faro. They join a select group of lower-division clubs competing in Europe, including Iceland's Vestri.

Historically, several clubs have navigated this path. Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic played European competitions after relegation following cup victories, while FC Vaduz regularly competes in Europa League qualifiers despite being in the Swiss second division. Torreense's achievement highlights how cup success can override league position in European qualification.
