Spanish Fan's 366-Mile Mix-Up at Wrong St James' Park

A Spanish football fan's Champions League dreams turned into a 366-mile mix-up when he arrived at Exeter City's stadium instead of Newcastle United's. The supporter, expecting to watch Barcelona FC face Newcastle in the Uefa Champions League, found himself at St James Park in Exeter, Devon, after traveling from London.

Exeter City Football Club said the fan only realized his error when he showed his ticket to staff at the wrong venue. Instead of the anticipated Champions League clash, he was given a free ticket to watch Exeter City's League One match against Lincoln City, which ended in a 0-1 defeat for the home side. Meanwhile, the actual match he intended to see saw Barcelona draw 1-1 with Newcastle United at their St James' Park.

Adam Spencer, supporter experience officer at Exeter City, described the fan as "pretty gutted and a bit embarrassed" by the mix-up. The club welcomed him to watch a game at the "real St James Park" and said he was "welcome back anytime." The incident highlights how easily confusion can arise between venues sharing similar names across England's football landscape.
