Slot Defends English Clubs After Champions League Struggles

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions about English clubs' Champions League performances this week. None of the six Premier League representatives secured a victory in the first legs of their last-16 ties. Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat at Galatasaray, while Arsenal drew 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen, Newcastle held Barcelona to a 1-1 draw, Chelsea and Tottenham both lost 5-2 at Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid respectively, and Manchester City lost 3-0 at Real Madrid.

Slot emphasized the sample size is too small for sweeping judgments. 'To jump to a conclusion after one gameday,' Slot stated, 'I think that's such a small sample size, that's never the smartest thing to do.' He suggested waiting until next week for a potentially different picture. Slot also noted the lack of a winter break for English clubs, though he stopped short of blaming it for the losses, pointing instead to the quality of opposition and the disadvantage of playing away from home in four of the five other ties. 'To jump to conclusions - [whether it is] missing a winter break, [or that] the level of the Premier League is not as high as we expected it to be - that would be, for me at this moment of time, not the right conclusion to make.'.
