Senegal camp disputes: food, bonuses and coach contract

Senegal's World Cup camp shifted to the four‑star Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, a step down from the five‑star Fairmont Palace used for AFCON 2025. The hotel sits beside the team's Rutgers training base, limiting any logistical impact. Rumours of sub‑standard meals surfaced, but the squad’s own chef prepared menus until the second pre‑tournament friendly, after which a replacement took over without player complaint.

The delegation’s grievances stemmed from officials and their families staying in nearby hotels, occasionally ordering non‑Senegalese food and expressing disappointment officially and publicly. Meanwhile, several federation members traveled at personal cost, crowding the camp environment. Players and staff also voiced frustration over unpaid bonuses, which the government finally disbursed days before the tournament opener.

Coach Aliou Cissé, who took charge in 2024, finally signed a new deal worth £480,000 a year plus an £80,000 bonus after months of state‑approved negotiations stalled by political turmoil. He stressed that the contract saga was a matter of principle, not money, and insisted the squad remains focused on advancing past recent 3‑1 defeats to France and 3‑2 loss to Norway.
