Rooney suggested that if Guardiola were an option, the FA should pursue him. "If Pep Guardiola is available, then maybe you go and get him," Rooney stated, highlighting Guardiola's status as a top manager. He acknowledged Tuchel's World Cup inexperience, noting, "The World Cup is different and you need to feel that environment and now he's felt it."

Tuchel's contract extension, signed before the World Cup, was questioned by Rooney, who found it "a little bit strange" given the stated priority of winning the tournament. Rooney also criticized squad selection, arguing that including players merely content to be "happy around the camp" was detrimental.
