It remains unconfirmed how the mistakes occurred. A club statement indicated that "assets remained on our online store in error and have now been removed," and thanked the BBC for highlighting the issue. The club emphasized its in-house creative team, supported by a leading design agency and photographer, produces high-quality content.

The BBC verified that physical merchandise available at Reading's club shop displayed the team's name correctly.
