Prosecutors Seek Drop of Rocchi Sports Fraud Case

Prosecutors in Milan have asked that the sports‑fraud case against Gianluca Rocchi, the official who assigns referees in Italy’s top flight, be dismissed.

Rocchi, who suspended himself in April after being placed under investigation for “complicity in sporting fraud” during the 2024‑25 season, has always maintained his innocence. The inquiry, which lasted two years, found no evidence of match‑fixing and concluded that there was no “structured system aimed at interfering with appointments”. The allegations centred on Rocchi’s alleged role in selecting a referee for an Inter Milan match because he was “liked by Inter”, a V‑assistant decision to ignore an Inter player’s elbow, and a case where a VAR official was accused of pressuring a referee to check the pitch‑side monitor for a handball during Udinese’s 1‑0 win over Parma.

Prosecutors have forwarded the documents to sports‑justice authorities and the Italian Olympic Committee’s General Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any disciplinary breaches occurred. Sporting fraud is a criminal offence in Italy and carries a maximum sentence of 6 years in prison.
