Premier League Defenders Shine in World Cup Semi-Finals

Premier League players are well-represented in the World Cup semi-finals, particularly in defensive roles. Of the 41 Premier League players among the final four squads, a significant number bolster the defenses of Argentina, France, Spain, and England. For instance, England's entire starting outfield back six and goalkeeper in their quarter-final win all played in the Premier League last season, with nearly 95% of their defensive minutes attributed to Premier League footballers.

However, the trend reverses when examining attacking talent. France's front three against Morocco featured players from Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid, while Spain's attackers hailed from Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, and Barcelona. Even England's attacking options for next season are largely based outside the Premier League. Notably, none of England's semi-final goals came from players who featured in the Premier League last season, with goals scored by Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) and Harry Kane (Bayern Munich).

This suggests that while Premier League clubs are a strong source for defenders in contention for the trophy, the elite forwards are predominantly playing their club football elsewhere. The Premier League remains the most represented domestic competition, but its attacking talent is less prominent in the crucial stages of the tournament compared to other European leagues.
