Pep Guardiola's Suspension: Premier League Ban Rules Explained

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola faces a touchline ban for Saturday's match against West Ham and the FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool after accumulating six yellow cards this season. Premier League managers receive suspensions based on a progressive system: three yellows trigger a one-match ban, six result in two matches, nine lead to three matches, and 12 cards prompt a misconduct hearing.

These bans apply to league and FA Cup fixtures but not European competitions or domestic cup finals under new 2025-26 rules. Red cards automatically trigger a one-match touchline suspension, which the Football Association can extend. The most severe punishment is a stadium ban, preventing managers from entering the ground entirely.

Suspended managers must watch from the directors' box or stands opposite the technical area, unable to communicate directly with players or staff during matches. They can give pre-match team talks, use electronic devices to contact the dugout, and attend halftime meetings. However, extended bans prohibit all communication and access to the dressing room 30 minutes before and after games. Guardiola tops this season's caution list with six bookings, while Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler and Fulham's Marco Silva each have five.
