Onana set for Trabzonspor loan as United reshuffle goalkeepers

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is on the brink of a loan return to Turkish side Trabzonspor. Sources say the deal is about 90% complete and contains no purchase option. Onana logged 29 appearances for Trabzonspor last season, capping the campaign by helping the club win the Turkish Cup for the first time since 2020.

United paid £47.2m for the 30‑year‑old from Inter Milan in 2023 and he still has two years left on his contract. His sole United outing came in the EFL Cup loss to League Two side Grimsby, a penalty shootout defeat at Blundell Park. Scheduled to report for pre‑season on 9 July, Onana recognised he could not displace first‑choice keeper Senne Lammens.

With Lammens away on Belgium duty for the World Cup, Carrick’s goalkeeping roster may feature backup Altay Bayindir, youngster Radek Vitek and veteran Tom Heaton for the opening friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on 17 July. The loan would give Onana regular minutes while United start pre‑season with a largely inexperienced keeper group.

By confirming the move, United clear a surplus goalkeeper and preserve Onana’s development, while Trabzonspor regain a proven shot‑stopper ahead of their domestic campaign. The arrangement leaves Carrick with limited senior options between pre‑season and the start of the Premier League for the upcoming season in England.
