Norway’s turf, coaching model fuels World Cup success

Norway’s 26‑man World Cup squad, featuring Erling Haaland and captain Martin Odegaard, has become a force in international football. Seventeen players compete in Europe’s top four leagues, and the team advanced to the quarter‑final, where it will face England after victories over Ivory Coast and Brazil.

The transformation began with a massive push for artificial pitches between 2000 and 2010. By 2015 Norway had installed 539 synthetic surfaces and renovated an additional 586 from 2016 to 2025, turning a winter‑limited sport into a year‑round activity that sharpened technical ability.

A second driver is the National Team School, launched in 2013. The program links grassroots clubs, districts, and top clubs, producing a pipeline that delivered 14 of the 15 players in Norway’s 2‑1 win over Brazil from youth training. Martin Odegaard joined Real Madrid for 4 m euros at 16, a testament to the system’s reach.

Norway’s dual focus on infrastructure and integrated coaching has paid dividends on the pitch and in the transfer market. The country now supplies a steady stream of talent to elite clubs while strengthening its domestic league, positioning Norway as a sustainable football model for the next decade.
