Veteran midfielder Luka Modric has earned selection in Croatia's World Cup squad despite recovering from a fractured cheekbone sustained in April. The 40-year-old Inter Milan playmaker underwent surgery after a clash with Juventus but has been training with a protective mask. Coach Zlatko Dalic expressed confidence in Modric's fitness, saying the midfielder will be in good form for the tournament.

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol also makes the cut despite a broken shin suffered in January. Dalic plans to use the 24-year-old in warm-up matches to rebuild match fitness. Luka Modric will compete in his fifth World Cup, having been instrumental in Croatia's 2018 final run and 2022 semi-final appearance. The squad features three English-based players including goalkeeper Ivor Pandur at Hull City.

Croatia opens against England on June 17 in Dallas before facing Panama and Ghana. Dalic emphasized Croatia's tactical flexibility, promising a more defensive approach against England while staying attack-minded against the other group opponents. The coach highlighted Croatia's blend of quality, youth and experience as key assets for advancing beyond the group stage.

The 26-man roster includes experienced Serie A campaigners and promising young talent. Former Ballon d'Or winner Modric's leadership and midfield creativity remain central to Croatia's World Cup ambitions, even at age 40.
