Manchester United Pull Out of EFL Trophy and National League Cup for 2026-27 Season

Manchester United confirmed they will skip both the EFL Trophy and National League Cup next season, prioritizing the UEFA Youth League instead. The club cited their return to European competition and a reduced professional development squad as the main factors behind the decision. This marks a significant shift in their youth development strategy.

The Red Devils only entered the EFL Trophy in 2019, five years after its 2016 revamp that invited Premier League academies. Despite Under-21s coach Travis Binnion previously praising the competition's quality, United failed to progress beyond the group stage last campaign. They exited the National League Cup at the league phase too, playing just ten matches across both tournaments before Christmas.

United will focus on the Youth League, featuring at least eight matches against Under-19 opposition, plus continued participation in the Premier League Under-21 International Cup. Their quarter-final exit to Real Madrid at Old Trafford last season showed their potential in that competition.

A decision on the 2027-28 youth program remains pending, while negotiations continue with Adam Lawrence to extend his tenure as Under-21 manager. Lawrence returned to United after a brief spell at Newcastle following Binnion's promotion to Michael Carrick's senior setup.
