Stephen Torpey has outlined his ambitious vision for Manchester United's academy after joining as director in August 2025. The 44-year-old, who left Brentford for the role, described it as 'the pinnacle of youth football' and emphasized his goal to make United 'the greatest academy in the world.' His comments come as United's youth teams excel this season, reaching the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals and leading their respective leagues.

Torpey addressed recent criticism from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about slipping standards, explaining that the comments likely referred to aging facilities at the Carrington training ground. The academy infrastructure has lagged behind the £50m revamp focused on senior and women's teams. 'It's like decorating your home,' Torpey said, noting plans are underway to refurbish and regenerate the academy facilities to match the club's ambitions.

On player development, Torpey emphasized a balanced approach to social media and individual expression. He cautioned against treating young players as 'robots' while acknowledging the pressure on teenagers like 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who has 442,000 Instagram followers. Torpey also praised manager Michael Carrick's genuine engagement with the academy, noting his attendance at staff meetings and games. With prospects like Gabriel, Shea Lacey, and the Fletcher twins emerging, Torpey stressed the importance of nurturing talent carefully: 'It is easier to spoil talent than it is to help it to flourish.'
