Sheffield Wednesday forward Jamal Lowe has revealed that his wife was sent a racially abusive message on social media. The comment was posted multiple times on his partner's Instagram photos after the 32-year-old Jamaica international was sent off in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat at Notts County.

The League One club released a statement on Wednesday saying "racism is abhorrent. It has no place in football or in society, and we condemn this abuse in the strongest possible terms." Lowe responded on Instagram: "Bad performance or not, racially abusing a player from the team you 'support' is miles off it." He added: "Parents educate your kids, call out family members who display this type of sick behaviour."

The UK Policing Football Unit confirmed to BBC Sport that it is investigating the matter. In a statement, it said there is absolutely no place for racial abuse, either online or in person, and that it will do everything possible to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

It is the second time this year that racist abuse has been directed at a Sheffield Wednesday player after a game. In April, an unidentified Owls player was targeted following a 1-1 draw against Leicester. The club said the latest incident is not the first involving its players, staff and their families this season. In 2024, the club was fined £12,500 and an Owls fan was banned for five years after Kasey Palmer of Coventry was subjected to a racist gesture during a Championship match.
