Ivory Coast coach calls Schweinsteiger comments potentially racist

Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Fae has accused former Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger of making potentially racist remarks about their playing style. Schweinsteiger, working as a pundit for German broadcaster ARD, described the Ivorian approach as "a bit African football, a bit unorthodox, a bit wild" before Germany's 2-1 victory on June 20.

Fae's criticism comes after Schweinsteiger suggested Ivory Coast played football that was "not so conditioned by tactics" and unpredictable. The controversy has already sparked debate in German media, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declining to address the comments during a press conference in New York, calling it a "serious subject" he wasn't equipped to discuss.

Despite the loss to Germany, Ivory Coast advanced to the last 32 of the competition thanks to wins over Ecuador and Curacao in Group E. Their knockout stage fate will be decided on June 30 in Arlington, Texas, where they face either France or Norway.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions around stereotyping in football commentary, particularly when European voices describe African playing styles through reductive cultural lenses. Schweinsteiger's remarks have ignited uncomfortable conversations about unconscious bias in sports media.
