Italy World Cup Venue Choice Explained

Italy have selected the New Balance Arena in Bergamo for their World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland, a venue with just 24,900 capacity instead of the usual 70,000+ San Siro or Stadio Olimpico. This decision comes amid tremendous pressure on Italy, who have failed to qualify for the last two World Cup tournaments after group stage exits in 2010 and 2014, and play-off defeats by Sweden and North Macedonia.

The New Balance Arena, home to Serie A side Atalanta, completed a five-year renovation project in 2024. Italy's connection to the venue spans decades, with their first match there in 1964 and only four appearances total since then. Notably, Italy remain unbeaten at this ground, with their last appearance a 5-0 victory over Estonia in 2026 qualifying under Gennaro Gattuso.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill expressed delight with the venue choice, suggesting it suits his players who typically compete in stadiums of similar size. "I think we'll feel very at home in Bergamo and we won't be intimidated by the atmosphere at all," he stated. Both teams approach this high-stakes match with different motivations but equally familiar settings, creating a unique scenario in this crucial World Cup qualification clash.
