Iran Faces Visa Hurdle Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Iran's World Cup campaign hangs in the balance as the national federation waits for visa approvals from U.S. authorities. President Farshad Taj told IRNA that no visas have been issued yet, despite FIFA’s assurance that the team will play in the United States. The situation threatens to derail the squad’s preparation.

The dispute traces back to Canada’s border officials denying a delegation of Iranian FA officials entry, citing links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Taj said the team left Canada voluntarily after feeling mistreated. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that players with IRGC ties could face entry restrictions.

Gianni Infantino reiterated at last month’s Vancouver congress that Iran will compete in Los Angeles and Seattle, but the federation has presented ten conditions for participation, including visa access for staff who completed IRGC service. The federation’s list underscores the political undercurrents that could impact the squad’s readiness.

With matches scheduled for 15, 21 and 26 June, the delay threatens to leave the team without a clear training base. The FFIRI has secured Tucson, Arizona, as its hub, yet the lack of confirmed visas means the squad could arrive late or be cut short. The situation remains unresolved, putting Iran’s group stage prospects in jeopardy.
