Harvey Barnes called up to England squad for Uruguay and Japan friendlies

Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes is set to join Thomas Tuchel's England squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, replacing the injured Eberechi Eze. Eze missed Arsenal's Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City due to a lower leg injury, opening the door for Barnes to earn his second international call-up.

Barnes previously earned one England cap in a 2020 friendly against Wales and scored 14 goals this season for Newcastle. Scotland had attempted to convince the 28-year-old to switch allegiances through his grandparents, but Barnes declined and will now compete for a spot in Tuchel's squad.

The Three Lions face Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31 at Wembley Stadium, with several fringe players expected to get opportunities. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah has been ruled out of England's friendlies with a thigh injury, further reshaping the defensive options available to Tuchel.
