Hair pulling red cards spark debate in football

Sunderland defender Dan Ballard became the third player this season to receive a red card for pulling an opponent's hair during Saturday's 1-1 draw at relegated Wolves. Ballard challenged Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare for the ball before referee Paul Tierney, advised by VAR, showed the red card. The incident follows similar sendings-off for Everton's Michael Keane and Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez this term.

Current rules classify hair pulling as violent conduct, mandating a red card. Sunderland manager Regis le Bris questioned the application of this rule: "When it's not intentional, it was an accident. It's hard to execute the rule like it was intentional." Le Bris argues defenders face challenges when facing long-haired forwards and called for clearer regulations from the Premier League and referees.

Former Premier League referee Darren Cann suggests creating a separate category for hair pulling offenses to allow for varying ban lengths. "There is clear evidence that some hair pulls are extremely violent and others are not," Cann explained. The introduction of VAR has increased detection of these incidents, creating inconsistency as Fulham's Kenny Tete escaped punishment for a similar incident earlier this season.
