Fifa Probes Argentina's Falklands Banner

Fifa is "assessing match reports" following Argentina's World Cup semi-final victory, where players displayed a banner supporting their claim to the Falkland Islands. The defending champions defeated England 2-1 to advance to the final against Spain.

After the match, Argentina's players held up a banner stating "Las Malvinas son Argentinas," translating to "The Falklands are Argentine." The Falklands are a British overseas territory contested by both the UK and Argentina.

A Fifa spokesperson confirmed that the independent disciplinary committee is reviewing the situation and "considering the relevant circumstances before deciding on potential further steps." This follows a precedent where Argentina's football association was fined £20,000 in 2014 for a similar banner, which breached rules on political action and team misconduct.
