FIFA has sharply condemned a “concerted and ongoing effort” aimed at undermining the organization and its president, Gianni Infantino. The backlash follows a Daily Telegraph report that alleged Infantino’s former lover received a severance from UEFA during his tenure as general secretary. FIFA dismissed the claims as “unsubstantiated” and “false”, insisting that speculation must not be presented as fact.

Infantino faces mounting pressure from UEFA and European football bodies over his aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan, which would have created a new company to handle commercial and ticketing rights, selling 21% to a private investor. UEFA has lost confidence in Infantino, and NFF president Lise Klaveness urged his resignation. UEFA has also warned that a boycott of FIFA events remains an option if conditions are unmet.

Opposition is largely European, though the Mexican Football Federation and CAF support Infantino. The Confederation of African Football, along with 54 African nations, backs him, and Conmebol echoes the stance that any removal attempt must involve all 211 FIFA member countries.

Despite the controversy, Infantino remains protected by FIFA’s democratic structure. The organization reiterated that he was elected by member associations and continues to serve with their mandate. FIFA’s statement stressed that those lacking the support of member associations should not rely on allegations or misinformation to pursue change, highlighting the importance of established democratic processes within the sport.
