Zimbabwean international footballer Divine Lunga, 31, escaped unharmed after his car was shot at in Johannesburg on Sunday. The defender, who plays for South African club Mamelodi Sundowns and Zimbabwe's national team, was reportedly targeted by an unknown gunman in the Hillbrow suburb.

According to reports, the attack may have stemmed from a case of mistaken identity, with the gunman potentially believing Lunga was an undercover police officer. Lunga was reportedly traveling with his younger brother at the time. Police are investigating the incident as attempted murder, but no arrests have been made.

Lunga joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021 and has been instrumental in their recent successes, including multiple domestic league titles and their second African Champions League triumph in May. He has also represented Zimbabwe 21 times, most recently in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor the Zimbabwe national team have officially commented on the incident.
