Midfielder Dimitri Payet has retired from professional football at age 38. The Reunion-born player announced his departure during a half-time interview at Marseille's home match against Lille on Sunday. Payet spent 20 years at the pinnacle of the sport, winning 38 caps for France and featuring in their Euro 2016 final squad.

He joined West Ham United from Marseille in 2015 for £10.7 million, later returning to the French club in 2017 for £25 million. At West Ham, he scored 15 goals in 60 appearances, becoming a fan favourite before leaving against the club's wishes to 'return to his roots'. Payet also played for Nantes, St-Etienne, Lille, and Brazilian side Vasco da Gama, concluding his career with the latter.
