Ousmane Dembele's connection with non-league Winchester City began virtually in the computer game Football Manager during the 2018 World Cup. In a video posted by France, Dembele joked with Antoine Griezmann about bringing the trophy to Winchester. At the 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony, Dembele came seventh, having won the award 12 months prior after leading PSG to a treble.
Winchester City manager Craig Davis revealed a media member attended the red carpet with a Winchester shirt, posting a photo featuring Dembele in the background. Dembele replied with emojis, sparking renewed interest. Davis described the link as "tenuous" but welcomed the attention for the eighth-tier Citizens.
The story highlights the unique intersection of top-flight stardom and non-league football, fueled by a popular video game and social media interaction.
