Burnley have appointed Fabio Celestini as their new head coach, tasking him with turning around a struggling Clarets side. The team has won just once in the Championship this season and sits in 22nd position, with poor form dating back to a difficult Premier League campaign last year. They have also gone without a home league win for over a year.
Celestini's arrival follows the recent appointment of Diego Lopez as director of football earlier this week. Lopez, who is responsible for finding a new manager after Hayen departed following Saturday's 4-1 defeat by Lincoln City, praised Celestini's qualities.
"Fabio brings the passion, experience and knowledge we were looking for," Lopez said. "He showed extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley. We want people who truly want to be here and help this club grow. Fabio is a clear example of that."
Contract details were not disclosed. A former Switzerland international midfielder with 35 caps, Celestini began his managerial career at Italian club Terracina. His coaching resume includes spells at FC Basel, CSKA Moscow, Lausanne, Lucerne, Lugano and Sion. He left CSKA Moscow by mutual agreement in May after 11 months in charge.
