Steve Clarke announced his resignation as Scotland head coach after the team's World Cup exit. The Scottish FA released a statement moments after Croatia defeated Ghana, a result that mathematically ended Scotland's hopes. Players were told Saturday as Clarke and the squad stayed at the Charlotte base. Clarke, who led Scotland to its first World Cup in 23 years, said the decision honoured the squad.

Scotland opened the tournament with a 1‑0 victory over Haiti in Boston, but subsequent 1‑0 loss to Morocco and 3‑0 thrashing by Brazil in Miami left them winless in the group. Despite entering the Brazil match as a strong candidate for a third‑place spot, defensive lapses cost them any chance of progression.

Clarke’s seven‑year tenure began in 2019, ending a 25‑year drought without a major finals appearance. Under his guidance Scotland qualified for Euro 2020, Euro 2024 and this World Cup, yet the side failed to win more than the opening game. In his farewell letter, Clarke praised the players and wished his successor luck, leaving the federation to rebuild.
