Celtic Transfer Update: Jota Out, Welsh Recall

Interim Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed winger Jota is unlikely to play again this season due to injury. He also revealed the club has recalled defender Stephen Welsh from his loan at Motherwell. O'Neill is actively seeking reinforcements in the January window, stating a signing is 'relatively close' as he looks to add depth to his squad.

The decision to bring Welsh back stems from a shortage of fit central defenders. With Cameron Carter-Vickers still absent, O'Neill is relying on Liam Scales, Auston Trusty, and Dane Murray. He admitted the club would be in 'a bit of trouble' if another injury struck that position. Welsh had been a standout performer for Motherwell, helping them keep nine clean sheets in 17 appearances.

While Welsh has enjoyed his time at Fir Park, O'Neill hinted a new loan arrangement could be possible. The interim boss is also monitoring returns for captain Callum McGregor and right-back Alistair Johnston, who is targeting a March comeback. O'Neill dismissed suggestions that the previous manager's system has complicated recruitment, insisting the process is simply difficult and that the club is working hard to secure targets.
