Can Mike Penders Replace Courtois at Chelsea?

Mike Penders comes from the same production line that produced the legendary Thibaut Courtois. The 19‑year‑old was signed from Belgian top‑flight club Genk in 2024 for a reported £17m and spent a season on loan at Strasbourg. Genk’s goalkeeper coach Gilbert Roex called the move “crazy,” noting that Penders had yet to play for Genk’s first team.

Roex praised Chelsea’s scouting, saying the club’s video analysts saw a player who could be worth much more in the future. Penders trained with Belgium’s 115‑cap goalkeeper at the World Cup, and the senior was reportedly impressed with both his play and character.

Chelsea currently keeps Robert Sanchez as first‑choice, with Penders under serious competition. The pragma was similar when Filip Jorgensen challenged the Spanish international, but he failed to displace Sanchez. A third option is also being sought, including US international Gabriel Slonina, who trialled with partner club Strasbourg.

Penders’ 52‑match season at Strasbourg, featuring runs to the semi‑finals of both the Coupe de France and the Conference League, showcased his improvement with the ball. Roex highlighted his rapid development from 13 to 18, citing his unbelievable mentality and calm demeanour, traits that could see him reach Courtois’s level.
