Fifa's disciplinary committee handed Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo a five-match ban for serious foul play. The 29-year-old received a red card during a 6-0 loss to Canada last Thursday. Madibo's challenge caused a severe injury to Canada's Ismael Kone, ending the midfielder's tournament run immediately.

Kone suffered fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his lower left leg. The 24-year-old Sassuolo player underwent surgery in Vancouver shortly after the match. Madibo visited the former Watford midfielder in the hospital following the incident, though the suspension remains subject to a potential appeal by the player.

Canada now prepares to face Switzerland in their final group match with hopes of qualifying as group winners. Meanwhile, Qatar faces a difficult path to the last 32. They must beat Bosnia-Herzegovina in their next fixture to keep any chance of progressing from the group stage alive.
