Derby County bolsters squad with Szmodics loan and Murkin signing

Derby County have bolstered their squad for the run‑in by securing Ipswich Town forward Sammie Szmodics on loan until season’s end. The Rams also announced a long‑term deal for Dutch Eredivisie left‑back Derry Murkin, signing him through 2029. Their addition gives manager Paul Warne more options up front and at left‑back.

Szmodics arrived at Ipswich after a prolific spell with Blackburn Rovers, where he thrived under Derby boss John Eustace. He helped Blackburn earn promotion, but has struggled at Portman Road, registering just one goal in 18 appearances this season. The lack of firepower has contributed to Derby slipping outside playoff spots. Earlier stints at Colchester United, Bristol City and Peterborough United illustrate a journeyman career.

Murkin, an English‑born winger‑capable left‑back, developed in the Netherlands after his family moved there at four. He broke through at Volendam, spent two seasons with Schalke 04 in Germany’s second tier, then joined Utrecht last summer. Derby moved quickly after loanee Owen Beck returned to Liverpool following hamstring surgery, leaving a vacancy on the left flank. His runs add width to a side lacking chances.
