Active satellites have surged from ~1,000 to ~17,000, driven largely by SpaceX's Starlink constellation (~11,000 satellites), with Amazon, Chinese constellations, and proposed orbital data centers adding thousands more.

Experts opinions diverge sharply. University of Texas professor Moriba Jah warns orbits will become unusable due to saturation, predicting loss of human life within a decade from reentering debris or spacecraft collisions. Conversely, SpaceX founder Elon Musk maintains space is vast and collisions unlikely, stating satellites are too tiny to see relative to Earth.

ESA's annual Space Environment Report provides the most credible assessment. The agency has tracked global space activities for a decade to evaluate sustainability. This year's report reveals striking and concerning changes, suggesting the truth lies between extreme optimism and pessimism. The growing congestion in low-Earth orbit demands urgent attention to preserve long-term spaceflight viability.
