Apple is bringing end-to-end encryption to RCS messaging between iOS and Android devices with the iOS 26.5 update. The feature appears in test versions as a beta rollout that Apple says will gradually become available through supported carriers. Users will find the setting enabled by default in the RCS Messaging section of the Messages settings menu.

When active, a lock icon will display in the Messages app on iPhones communicating with Android users, signaling that conversations are protected. GSMA, the standards body that introduced RCS E2EE support last year, enabled this cross-platform protocol that Apple previously said would arrive in future software updates. The feature began testing in iOS 26.4 but didn't launch publicly until now.

This encryption upgrade addresses growing privacy concerns around cross-platform messaging, where RCS previously lacked the security that iMessage and other encrypted services provide. While the rollout will happen gradually over time, the implementation marks a significant step forward for secure communication between competing smartphone ecosystems. The update makes end-to-end encryption standard rather than optional for millions of users switching between Apple and Android devices daily.
