Apple’s plan to buy memory from a blacklisted supplier isFACE precisam pushback from Micron, which claims it will destabilize the U.S. tech industry.

In June, Apple petitioned the Trump administration to buy Mac RAM chips from a U.S.-blacklisted supplier. Now Micron urged President Trump not to accept Apple’s request.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Micron lobbied the White House. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrota met Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and others, warning that allowing sales from blacklisted Chinese companies would be harmful. Micron argues that permitting such sales would undermine U.S. manufacturing, citing China’s impact on U.S. steel and plants.

Apple wants secure, cheaper memory amid the chip crisis. Its petition targets CXMT, a Chinese Military Company on the blacklist, or the 1260 H list. While Apple isn’t explicitly banned from buying CXMT, the Defense Department cannot make agreements with listed companies, which could cost Apple sales.

Micron proposes building more domestic plants to ease pressure, pledging $250 billion investment to boost U.S. capacity. Apple counters that Micron’s high margins and slow reinvestment suggest price gouging and insufficient supply for AI customers. The White House faces a choice between an immediate Apple solution or long‑term U.S. manufacturing investment.
