There are some interesting choices to make if you're looking at buying a 2026 Mac Studio. Despite the drama on the Internet about the Mac Studio, Apple has always had $5000+ computers to sell you. The 2026 Mac Studio lineup is not an exception, but rather an exemplar.

There was the Mac IIfx, way back in the day, and much later the original Mac Pro, which after starting at $2499 got expensive quickly to well over $5000 in 2006 dollars, for just a little more power at each step. There's the iMac Pro, and so forth. The Mac Studio M5 Ultra model is the headline-grabber for the sheer amount of power on tap, but it is not the best thing to come out of the refresh.

That M5 Ultra is extremely expensive, overkill for just about any actual Mac-based workload, and as of September 29, 2026, unavailable until 2027. What you can get now, and has a far better price-to-performance ratio, is the M5 Max Mac Studio. That one is aimed not so much at the Mac loyal, but to the AI bros, looking for a compact and power-efficient form factor, no matter the cost.

As such, the M5 Max model has a far better price-to-performance ratio and is now my daily driver, like the M1 Ultra was before it. The Mac Studio design carries over unchanged. It is a compact aluminum block that sits on a desk.

It measures 7.7 inches square and 3.7 inches tall, and weighs in at six pounds. There's the massive vent on the back, the circular vented plinth underneath, and the usual selection and placement of ports. For the M5 Max Mac Studio there are two 10-gigabit USB-C ports and an SDXC card slot on the front, as well as a small status light.

On the back is Thunderbolt 5, USB-A, power, and Ethernet ports. The M5 Max chip is the heart of this machine. My unit, bought for personal use and reviewed here, has 36GB of RAM, an upgraded 1TB SSD, an 18-core CPU and a 32-core GPU.

There are more options, extending the pricing ladder to more than the M5 Ultra version. Apple splits the CPU into 6 super cores and 12 performance cores, with the usual platitudes about clock speed. This is usually where we discuss speed, but this time, we have to also talk about AI.

A 16-core Neural Engine handles machine learning duties as usual, but it's not the only thing. The bigger change is in performance per watt efficiency gains that make the M5 Max significantly cooler and quieter than previous generations even under heavy load. In a 36 DBa office, it never got above 39 DBa using a faithful Kanomax meter.

It is a very expensive practical demonstration of "If it ain't broke..." the reality of how Apple designs products. Apple likes that five or six-year product iteration between major redesigns, and we're on year four of the Mac Studio.
