New Jersey Lt. Governor Dale Caldwell violated workplace and ethics policies, according to a report released Thursday. Investigators found he sought a promotion for his girlfriend and made a sexually charged comment to a staff member.

Governor Mikie Sherrill called on Dr. Caldwell to resign, stating the behavior was "necessary and in the best interest of New Jersey residents." The 61-page report detailed multiple instances of misconduct, including a comment where Dr. Caldwell told a staff member ambitious women needed "a man who was in a position to help them," adding, "But you young women are looking for young sperm." Dr. Caldwell denied the allegations, suggesting race and gender were factors. The report also noted he brought nonpaying guests to seven events and recommended his girlfriend for a senior leadership position despite an ongoing investigation. Ms. Sherrill gave Dr. Caldwell until tomorrow to resign. Dr. Caldwell, a former president of Centenary University, stands as the fourth person to serve as lieutenant governor since the role was created by referendum in 2005. He oversees the Department of State and elections.
