A powerful storm system is barreling across the United States, bringing the threat of tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail from the Midwest to the East Coast. Memphis, Nashville, and Washington, D.C. face the highest risk of severe weather on Sunday and Monday, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 75 miles per hour.

Meteorologists warn that tornado conditions could develop quickly, particularly in the bull's-eye zone stretching from parts of Alabama and Mississippi into the lower Ohio Valley. Memphis and Columbus, Ga. have a 10 percent chance of experiencing strong tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center advises residents to have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, as nighttime storms may be difficult to see.

The severe weather follows a deadly start to the storm season, with recent storms killing at least six people in Michigan and Oklahoma. The threat will shift east on Monday, with the highest risk area stretching between South Carolina and Maryland, including Washington, Raleigh, and Richmond.
