Red Bull's Risk Strategy After Verstappen Criticism

Red Bull secured their first podium finish of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix, despite Max Verstappen qualifying only sixth. The four-time world champion openly criticized the team's set-up direction afterward, suggesting they hadn't listened to his feedback. Verstappen admitted he went along with their choice partly to demonstrate it wouldn't work, stating he needed to "let them feel for themselves that it doesn't work."

Team principal Mekies defended the strategy, confirming Red Bull's DNA involves taking risks when they believe they're not at the right balance with competitors. He emphasized this approach is crucial at the start of a new regulation cycle as teams continue learning about their packages. "We are going to try things with our drivers to unlock something, even if it's costing us something," Mekies explained, highlighting the value of experimentation.

The dynamic between Verstappen and the team includes what Mekies termed "I told you" moments, which he sees as essential for progress. Despite Verstappen's public criticism, Mekies affirmed drivers remain completely integrated in decision-making. "If you take risks, you will get the pain," he concluded, acknowledging that such moments push the team to continue exploring new directions.
