Red Bull Racing is facing a 2026 technical regulations challenge after prioritizing last year's RB21 development over its 2026 challenger, team principal Laurent Mekies revealed. The team diverted resources to salvage the 2025 season, resulting in the RB22 finishing fourth-quickest in 2026 - trailed by Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren - with Alpine's Gasly even outperforming it in qualifying.

Mekies defended the strategy, stating, "We didn't want to turn the page" despite knowing it would impact 2026 preparations. The RB21's late-season upgrades, including changes implemented at the Mexican Grand Prix, secured six wins for Max Verstappen in the final nine races. However, this push left the team 119 points behind Mercedes in the constructors' championship after three 2026 races.

The gamble preserved team morale, as Mekies noted, "It made me feel so happy for the girls and the guys" during last year's turnaround. But the RB22's underperformance highlights the risks of abandoning 2026 development. With new power units and regulations looming, Red Bull must balance repairing its 2025 car while preparing for 2026's technical overhaul.

Despite current struggles, Mekies emphasized the team's resilience: "We'll get through these difficulties" as they aim to replicate last year's comeback.
