Red Bull Admits F1 2026 Weakness: Ferrari, Mercedes Faster

Red Bull Racing has admitted it's not the team to beat heading into the 2026 Formula 1 season, with technical director Pierre Wache stating that Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren are currently faster. During winter testing in Bahrain, Red Bull's analysis suggests they're trailing the top three teams, though Wache acknowledges the difficulty in making accurate assessments due to varying fuel loads and testing programs.

Wache specifically identified low-speed traction and medium-speed corners as Red Bull's primary weaknesses, areas where their rivals have demonstrated superior performance. These issues mirror problems from last season, with Ferrari and Mercedes showing particularly strong straight-line speeds on low fuel. The French technical director emphasized that true performance comparisons won't be possible until qualifying in Melbourne when all teams run identical fuel levels.

Despite the power unit being a new collaboration between Red Bull and Ford Powertrains, Wache praised the engine team's achievement in getting the car running reliably. While rivals like Mercedes have commended Red Bull's energy management over multiple laps, Wache suggests competitors have caught up in this area. The Milton Keynes team now faces the challenge of addressing their traction deficiencies before the season opener, as they no longer consider themselves the benchmark in the paddock.
